Azam Khan Faces Increased Sentencing in PAN Card Case

Rampur, May 23: Senior leader of the Samajwadi Party and former minister Azam Khan is facing escalating legal troubles. On Saturday, the MP-MLA Sessions Court increased his previously determined seven-year sentence to ten years in a case involving two PAN cards.

The court not only raised Azam Khan’s sentence but also increased the fine imposed. While the sentence for his son, Abdullah Azam, remains at seven years, his fine has been heightened. Initially, both were sentenced to seven years and fined ₹50,000 each by the magistrate court.

Following the MP-MLA court’s decision, the challenges for both leaders have intensified. In response, BJP legislator Akash Kumar Saxena welcomed the court’s ruling.

Speaking to reporters, Saxena described the decision as historic, noting its uniqueness as it involved an appeal for an increased sentence, which was granted. He highlighted that Abdullah Azam’s sentence was upheld, along with the imposed fine.

Prosecution lawyer Seema Rana stated that the case revolved around the possession of two PAN cards. The lower court had convicted both defendants, prompting them to appeal in the Sessions Court. She confirmed that Azam Khan was fined ₹5 lakh and sentenced to ten years, an increase from the previous ₹50,000 fine. Abdullah Azam was fined approximately ₹3.5 lakh.

It is pertinent to mention that BJP legislator Akash Saxena filed the case, which was registered in 2019 at the Civil Lines police station. On November 17, 2025, the court found both guilty, sentencing them to seven years and imposing fines of ₹50,000 each. Azam Khan filed an appeal against the sentence on November 19, 2025, which was dismissed on April 20, 2026.
