Ranchi, March 17: The Jharkhand government is taking significant steps to incorporate artificial intelligence (AI) and robotic technology into healthcare services. This initiative aims to enhance the timely detection and effective treatment of severe diseases like tuberculosis (TB) and cervical cancer.
On Monday, a high-level meeting was convened under the chairmanship of Ajay Kumar Singh, Additional Chief Secretary of the Health, Medical Education, and Family Welfare Department, with representatives from the Meril company.
During the meeting, proposals for AI-based screening and the establishment of a robotic skill lab at RIMS were discussed, aligning with national goals such as ‘TB-Free India’ and ‘Cervical Cancer-Free India.’
Company representatives highlighted that AI technology will simplify and make early detection of cervical cancer more affordable. This method does not require heavy machinery, allowing health workers at the ANM level to conduct screenings at the grassroots level.
Similarly, a proposal was made to use AI-based X-ray technology for TB identification, enabling quicker diagnosis and clarity on drug resistance through further testing.
Recognizing the utility of these technologies, the Additional Chief Secretary has directed the initiation of training as a pilot project at RIMS. The meeting also explored the possibilities of robotic surgery.
Experts from the company stated that robotic technology allows for more precise execution of complex surgeries, including general surgery, cancer, urology, and cardiac procedures. This technology reduces blood loss during operations and facilitates faster recovery times. To make robotic surgery accessible to the general public, the Additional Chief Secretary instructed a comparative cost study based on the Ayushman Bharat scheme and CGHS package rates. The department is exploring the potential for cost-based packages to be implemented in a PPP mode.
The meeting was attended by Shashi Prakash Jha, Director of NHM campaigns, Dr. Hirendra Biruwa, Medical Superintendent of RIMS, and Professor Pankaj Bodra, Head of the Surgery Department, along with several senior officials from the health department. The health department is optimistic that this initiative will lead to the expansion of modern and advanced medical facilities in Jharkhand’s government hospitals in the future.
