Guwahati, May 20: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Wednesday that the state government is preparing to present the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill in the upcoming assembly session. He also indicated that a cabinet expansion is likely to occur in the first week of June.
During a media interaction, Chief Minister Sarma expressed the government’s commitment to implementing the UCC law in Assam and expressed confidence that the bill would be passed in the assembly.
Responding to questions about potential cabinet reshuffles and the inclusion of new ministers, he stated that the cabinet expansion is expected to happen gradually in the first week of June. He mentioned that the upcoming assembly session would commence with the election of a new speaker for the Assam Assembly.
He noted that the first day of the assembly session would involve the election of the speaker. Furthermore, the Chief Minister announced that the government would introduce the UCC Bill during the current session.
Sarma told reporters, “In this assembly session, we will bring the UCC Bill, and we will pass it. This was one of our longstanding commitments that if I became Chief Minister, we would pass the UCC in the first session. We are moving in that direction.”
The proposed UCC Bill is expected to spark significant political debate in the state. The ruling BJP claims that this law will ensure equal civil laws for all citizens, regardless of religion, while opposition parties may raise concerns about its impact on personal laws and traditional practices.
However, the Chief Minister did not elaborate on the provisions of the proposed law or specify the exact date when the bill would be introduced in the assembly. In recent years, the Assam government has pursued several legislative and administrative reforms aimed at enhancing uniformity and transparency in governance.
