Cyprus President Christodoulides Arrives in India for Strengthening Bilateral Ties

Mumbai, May 20: President Nikos Christodoulides of the Republic of Cyprus is visiting India from May 20 to 23 at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This visit is seen as a significant step towards enhancing cooperation in various sectors, including trade, investment, technology, defense, education, and innovation.

President Christodoulides will arrive in Mumbai on Wednesday evening, accompanied by a high-level delegation. This delegation includes Foreign Minister Dr. Konstantinos Kombos, Minister of Transport, Communications, and Works Alexis Vafeades, senior officials, and business leaders. This marks his first visit to India during his current term.

The President is scheduled to land at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport at 5:40 PM. Following his arrival, he will participate in events organized in Mumbai.

On May 22, Friday, he will meet with India’s Foreign Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar at the Taj Mahal Hotel at 10:00 AM. Subsequently, he will pay homage at Raj Ghat at 11:10 AM. A meeting with Prime Minister Modi is set for 11:30 AM at Hyderabad House, followed by a press statement at 12:55 PM, which will be open to all media. A formal meeting with the President is scheduled for 7:00 PM at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

On May 23, Saturday, he will depart from Delhi at 9:00 AM, arriving back in Mumbai at 11:00 AM before continuing his onward journey at noon.

This visit comes within a year of Prime Minister Modi’s historic trip to Cyprus on June 15-16, 2025, which was the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Cyprus in over 20 years. The significance of this trip is heightened by Cyprus’s presidency of the European Union Council.

During the visit, Prime Minister Modi and President Christodoulides will discuss enhancing cooperation in several areas, including trade, investment, technology, education, culture, defense, security, artificial intelligence, fintech, innovation, and research. They will also address regional and global issues and share views on collaboration in international forums. A lunch in honor of the President will be hosted by the Prime Minister.

President Christodoulides will also meet with India’s President Droupadi Murmu and attend an official dinner. Foreign Minister Dr. Jaishankar will also pay a courtesy visit. Additionally, President Christodoulides will participate in a business forum in Mumbai.

India and Cyprus have maintained strong and reliable relations for a long time. This visit will further strengthen ties and provide new directions for cooperation, particularly in the broader context of India-EU relations. Both countries will celebrate 65 years of diplomatic relations on February 10, 2027.
