New Delhi, May 7: Amid escalating tensions with the United States, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi is expected to visit India. He is likely to participate in the upcoming BRICS summit in New Delhi.
India currently holds the BRICS chairmanship and is preparing to host a meeting of foreign ministers on May 14-15. This meeting is a crucial step leading up to the 18th BRICS summit scheduled for September.
This visit follows a high-level phone call between Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar and his Iranian counterpart, Seyyed Abbas Araghchi. With the world’s attention focused on the instability in West Asia, Tehran views BRICS as an essential platform for diplomatic dialogue.
New Delhi’s role as a mediator remains significant, especially after the recent BRICS ambassadors’ meeting failed to reach a consensus on the ongoing conflict.
Recently, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi visited China, where he praised a four-point peace proposal presented by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. The discussions centered on regional peace, stability, and cooperation.
Araghchi posted on social media platform ‘X’ stating, “I had constructive talks with China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing. Both sides reaffirmed Iran’s right to defend its national sovereignty and dignity.”
He noted that Iran appreciates the Chinese proposal aimed at maintaining and promoting regional peace and stability.
Araghchi expressed confidence in China, hoping that the Chinese side will continue to play a positive role in promoting peace and preventing war. He also supports the establishment of a new regional order post-conflict that can balance development and security.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi labeled U.S. and Israeli military actions against Iran as “illegal,” emphasizing the urgent need for a ceasefire in the region.
According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Wang Yi stated during his meeting with Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi in Beijing that West Asia stands at a “critical juncture,” and a comprehensive ceasefire is essential for regional stability.
