Stockholm, May 17: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Sweden on Sunday. His aircraft was escorted by Swedish Gripen fighter jets. Prior to this, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte bid him farewell, while Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson warmly welcomed him at Gothenburg Airport.
As PM Modi’s plane crossed into Swedish airspace, it received special security from the Swedish Air Force. A similar scene was witnessed during his arrival in the UAE, where F-16 jets escorted his aircraft.
PM Modi will spend Sunday and Monday in Sweden, at the invitation of Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson. During this visit, both leaders will review bilateral relations between India and Sweden and discuss enhancing cooperation in trade, investment, and new technologies.
Bilateral trade between India and Sweden reached $7.75 billion in 2025. The focus will be on strengthening partnerships in environmentally friendly technologies, artificial intelligence (AI), emerging technologies, startups, resilient supply chains, defense, space, and climate change.
According to India’s Ambassador to Sweden, Anurag Bhushan, PM Modi’s visit is crucial for strengthening mutual relations, enhancing cooperation, and deepening connections between the people of both countries.
In discussions, Bhushan noted that the Indian community in Sweden is very excited about this visit, which is expected to further cultural and diplomatic ties. He stated, “The Prime Minister is coming at the invitation of Swedish PM Ulf Kristersson, so he will certainly engage in bilateral consultations with Kristersson and his leadership team. Following that, the Prime Minister will also interact with Sweden’s business community and address members of the European Roundtable of Industry, which comprises top companies in Europe.”
During this visit, PM Modi will also address the ‘European Roundtable for Industry’ alongside Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. This platform is considered a significant group of major companies and industry leaders in Europe. PM Modi previously visited Sweden in 2018 to participate in the first India-Nordic Summit.
