
Himachal Pradesh, May 17: Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) clinched a spot in the IPL 2026 playoffs by defeating Punjab Kings by 23 runs at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium on Sunday. This victory marks RCB as the first team to qualify for the playoffs this season. With this win, RCB has achieved nine victories in the season’s 13 matches, accumulating a total of 18 points, placing them at the top of the standings.
Punjab Kings needed 223 runs to win but struggled from the start. Early wickets fell quickly, with Priyansh Arya (0), Prabhsimran Singh (2), and captain Shreyas Iyer (1) dismissed within the first few overs, leaving the team reeling at just 19 runs. Despite a valiant effort from Shashank Singh, who scored 56 runs off 27 balls, Punjab could not recover. The team ended their innings at 199 runs for 8 wickets, losing by 23 runs. Cooper Connolly contributed 37 runs off 22 balls, while Suryansh Shedge and Marcus Stoinis added 35 and 37 runs, respectively.
For RCB, Bhuvneshwar Kumar took 2 wickets for 38 runs in 4 overs, while Rasikh Salam Dar claimed 3 wickets for 36 runs in his 4 overs. Josh Hazlewood, Suyesh Sharma, and Romario Shepherd each secured 1 wicket.
This defeat marks Punjab’s sixth loss in their last seven matches, following a streak of six consecutive wins earlier in the season. With 13 points from 13 matches, the team currently sits in fourth place, making their playoff chances increasingly difficult.
Earlier, RCB batted first and scored 222 runs for the loss of 4 wickets. Virat Kohli and Venkatesh Iyer both scored half-centuries, with Kohli hitting 58 runs off 37 balls, including 3 sixes and 4 fours. Iyer remained unbeaten with 73 runs off 40 balls, featuring 4 sixes and 8 fours. Devdutt Padikkal and Tim David also contributed with 45 and 28 runs, respectively.
For Punjab Kings, Harpreet Brar took 2 wickets, while Arshdeep Singh and Yuzvendra Chahal claimed 1 wicket each.
