Mumbai, May 17: South cinema’s two biggest stars, Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth, have long been a topic of discussion among fans. Both have ruled Tamil cinema for decades, each carving out their unique identity. Often, comparisons arise between the two, leading many to believe there might be intense rivalry.
Recently, Kamal Haasan addressed this topic directly, stating that there has never been any jealousy between him and Rajinikanth.
During a media interaction, Kamal was asked about a recent statement made by Rajinikanth. The latter had jokingly expressed happiness over Vijay becoming the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, adding that he might have felt a tinge of jealousy if Kamal had taken the position instead.
Responding to this, Kamal clarified that Rajinikanth’s comment was made in jest. “We have never felt jealousy towards each other. We have always respected one another and focused on our work,” he said.
Kamal further elaborated, “Rajinikanth and I are like good players. While there is healthy competition between us in films, there has never been jealousy. Even if we played cricket, our relationship would remain the same.”
He emphasized that competition is essential in every field, as it drives individuals to perform better. However, he noted that competition does not equate to enmity.
Currently, Kamal Haasan is also in the spotlight for addressing issues related to the Tamil film industry. He recently met with Tamil Nadu’s new Chief Minister, Vijay, during which he presented six demands aimed at strengthening the state’s film industry.
One of his primary requests is for the state government to launch its own OTT platform. Kamal believes this would allow Tamil audiences to access Tamil films, independent movies, and documentaries at lower prices, benefiting both emerging artists and new filmmakers.
He also called for the abolition of the 4% tax on films, arguing that the costs of production and running theaters are continually rising, and this tax adds an unnecessary burden on the industry.
Additionally, he urged for stringent measures to combat online piracy, suggesting the establishment of a robust anti-piracy team within the Tamil Nadu police’s cybercrime department to swiftly remove leaked films from the internet.
To support theater owners, Kamal proposed allowing five screenings of each film. He also appealed for the government to introduce new incentive schemes to promote film production.
