Bhubaneswar, May 4: The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has criticized the state government for a ₹4 increase in milk prices announced by the Odisha State Cooperative Milk Producers’ Federation (OMFED). The party claims that the ‘double-engine’ government has placed a heavy burden on consumers.
During a press conference at the party headquarters, BJD spokesperson and media coordinator Dr. Lenin Mohanty stated that out of the ₹4 hike, only ₹1 will reach dairy farmers, while the remaining ₹3 will go to the state government.
He remarked, “The government previously tried to gain publicity by announcing an additional ₹1 for farmers, but their true intentions have now been revealed. Consumers are being charged ₹4 under the guise of giving ₹1 to farmers.”
The BJD has demanded that the government pass the entire ₹4 increase directly to the farmers. Mohanty emphasized that rising prices of cooking gas have already made life difficult for the common people.
He noted that there have been four price hikes in gas over the past six months, which is akin to pouring salt on a wound, further increasing the cost of living.
OMFED’s decision to raise milk prices by ₹4 per liter will directly impact everyday consumers. Reports indicate that the price of toned milk has risen from ₹50 to ₹54 per liter, while premium milk now costs ₹58 instead of ₹54.
Similarly, the price of Gold Premium milk has increased from ₹56 to ₹60 per liter, and the Gold Premium Plus variant will now be sold at ₹64 instead of ₹60.
Additionally, the prices for 500-milliliter packets of toned and premium milk have been set at ₹27 and ₹29, respectively.
