New Delhi, May 4: India’s manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) reached 54.7 in April, up from 53.9 in March. This increase is attributed to a rise in new orders, including exports, and job opportunities. The data was released in the HSBC Flash India PMI report on Monday.
April’s figures indicate that activities in India’s manufacturing sector remain robust, with a sustained increase in new business. Exports have emerged as a bright spot, showing the fastest growth rate since last September.
However, the report also highlighted that companies are experiencing heightened inflationary pressures due to tensions in the Middle East. Input and output prices have surged, marking the fastest increases in six months and four months, respectively.
Pranjul Bhandari, Chief India Economist at HSBC, stated, “The impacts of the Middle East conflict are becoming increasingly evident, particularly in terms of inflation, with input costs rising at the fastest pace since August 2022, and output prices increasing at the fastest rate in six months.”
Despite the rise in PMI from 53.9 in March to 54.7 in April, the seasonally adjusted HSBC India Manufacturing PMI—which reflects overall conditions based on new orders, production, employment, supplier delivery times, and inventory levels—indicates the second slowest improvement in operational conditions in nearly four years.
Survey participants noted that stability in advertising and demand supported sales and production. However, growth has been hindered by a competitive environment, ongoing conflict in the Middle East, and reluctance among customers to approve pending quotations.
Indian manufacturers remain optimistic about growth prospects. While overall sentiment has slightly decreased from March, it remains at its second-highest level since November 2024.
