Dispur, May 4: The counting of votes in the Assam Assembly elections has brought an early setback for the Congress party. Gaurav Gogoi, the state president and candidate, is currently trailing in the Jorhat constituency. After the fifth round of counting, BJP candidate Hiten Nath Goswami is leading.
According to initial trends, the BJP has received 23,339 votes, while Congress has garnered 15,326 votes. This gives Goswami an advantage of 8,013 votes. As counting progresses, this gap appears to be widening, marking a significant early blow for Congress. However, the party remains hopeful that the situation may change in the upcoming rounds.
The counting is ongoing under tight security across the state, with clearer results expected as the day unfolds. Early trends show the NDA, led by the BJP, ahead in 98 seats, while the opposition coalition led by Congress is leading in 25 seats.
Voting in Assam took place on April 9, with over 2.5 crore voters, achieving a turnout of 85.96%.
A total of 722 candidates are contesting in this election, including 59 women. Congress has fielded the highest number of candidates at 99, while the BJP has nominated candidates for 90 seats. The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) contested in 30 seats.
Among NDA allies, the Assam Gana Parishad has 26 candidates, and the Bodoland People’s Front has 11. In the opposition camp, the Raijor Dal has 13 candidates, the Assam Ethnic Council has 10, the CPI(M) has 3, and the All Party Hill Leaders Conference has 2 candidates.
Additionally, the Aam Aadmi Party and the United People’s Party Liberal have both fielded candidates in 18 seats, the Trinamool Congress in 22, and the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha in 16. There are also 258 independent candidates in the fray.
