Miracle Averted as Vikramshila Bridge Collapse Prevented, Says SDM

Patna, May 4: A significant incident occurred in Bhagalpur, Bihar, where a 25-meter slab of the Vikramshila Bridge collapsed into the Ganges River. Following the incident, local authorities swiftly implemented barricades on both sides of the bridge, halting all traffic.

Bhagalpur’s Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Vikas Kumar and City DSP Ajay Kumar Chaudhary are currently monitoring the situation on-site. The administration has secured the area to prevent any further accidents.

According to Saket Kumar Roshan, the Executive Engineer of the Road Construction Division in Bhagalpur, the collapse was caused by damage to pillar number 33. He noted that alternative routes are being utilized while the situation is continuously monitored.

SDM Vikas Kumar informed the media that it was merely coincidental that the Traffic DSP and police personnel were patrolling the bridge at the time. He explained that the bridge’s section began to fall gradually, but an alert was issued in time. He described the lack of casualties as a divine blessing.

To facilitate the public, two alternative arrangements have been made. All vehicles will now reroute through Munger. Additionally, for commuters, students, and those seeking medical treatment, arrangements for a jetty, boats, and other means from Babupur Ganga Ghat will be established soon. A high-level team has been notified, and a bridge construction team is expected to arrive shortly. The administration is taking necessary steps continuously.

The SDM urged the public through the media to avoid taking any risks and to adhere to the administration’s directives.

It is noteworthy that the Vikramshila Bridge is a crucial 4.7-kilometer-long structure over the Ganges River in Bhagalpur district. It connects southern Bihar’s Bhagalpur with northern Bihar’s Nawgachhia, Purnia, and Katihar. As part of National Highway 131A, this two-lane bridge serves as a primary route for nearly 100,000 commuters daily.
