Supriya Pawar Leads in Baramati By-Election Vote Count

Mumbai, May 4: In the ongoing vote count for the Baramati by-election, trends released by the Election Commission of India (ECI) at 9:40 AM indicate that Supriya Pawar, the candidate from the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister, is leading by over 8,800 votes.

The counting of votes began earlier today. By the end of the first round, Supriya Pawar was ahead by 6,500 votes. Her lead expanded to 16,543 votes by the conclusion of the second round.

So far, a total of 27,264 votes have been counted, with Supriya Pawar receiving 26,773 votes. All other candidates combined have garnered only 491 votes.

In the Rahuri assembly constituency of Maharashtra, BJP candidate Akshay Shivajirav Kardile is currently in the lead, having received 11,071 votes by the second phase of counting, according to the Election Commission.

By-elections were held on April 9 and April 23 across various assembly seats in Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Nagaland, and Tripura. These elections became necessary due to the passing of sitting legislators, resulting in a fierce competition among major political parties.

In Maharashtra, the Baramati seat has drawn significant attention as it is considered a stronghold of the influential Pawar family. This seat became vacant following the tragic death of Ajit Pawar in a plane crash on January 28. His wife, Supriya Pawar, is contesting from this constituency, making it one of the most talked-about contests in the by-elections.

The Baramati assembly constituency has 384,000 registered voters, with a total of 23 candidates contesting, including Supriya Pawar. However, the withdrawal of major opposition parties has allowed her to maintain a clear advantage in continuing the Pawar family’s legacy in the state assembly.

Additionally, vote counting is also underway for assembly elections in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, West Bengal, Assam, and Puducherry, with final results expected by the end of the day after several rounds of counting.
