Washington, May 4: The United States is set to initiate a significant operation to rescue commercial vessels trapped in the Strait of Hormuz, utilizing military assistance. President Donald Trump announced this humanitarian effort amid rising tensions in the Middle East.
Trump stated that several countries have reached out to Washington for help, clarifying that they are not involved in the ongoing conflicts, yet their ships remain stranded in the Strait.
He emphasized, “For the well-being of Iran, the Middle East, and the United States, we have assured these nations that we will safely navigate their ships out of these confined waterways.” The President termed this initiative as ‘Project Freedom.’
The operation is scheduled to commence on Monday morning, according to Middle East time. Trump highlighted that the aim is to assist neutral and innocent individuals while ensuring that ships can operate freely and effectively.
He described this initiative as a humanitarian intervention, noting that conditions on many of the vessels are deteriorating. “Many of these ships are running low on food and essential supplies for the health and hygiene of large crews,” he added.
Trump also mentioned ongoing diplomatic discussions with Iran, stating, “I am fully aware that my representatives are having very positive conversations with Iran, which could lead to something beneficial for all.”
However, he warned against any interference, saying, “If there is any disruption to this humanitarian process, unfortunately, that interference will be dealt with strictly.”
U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed its military will support the mission starting May 4 to restore navigational freedom for commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
The Pentagon’s directed operation will involve a significant military deployment. According to CENTCOM, the support will include guided-missile destroyers, over 100 aircraft from land and sea, multi-domain unmanned platforms, and approximately 15,000 service members.
CENTCOM stated, “At the President’s direction, this mission will support merchant vessels wishing to transit essential international trade corridors. A quarter of the world’s oil trade and substantial amounts of fuel and fertilizer products are transported through this Strait.”
Admiral Brad Cooper, CENTCOM Commander, noted, “Our support for this defensive mission is crucial for regional security and the global economy as we maintain naval blockades.”
This operation will also receive backing from extensive diplomatic and military coordination efforts. The State Department, in partnership with the Department of Defense, has launched the Maritime Freedom Construct to enhance information sharing and cooperation among international partners.
