Germanys Chancellor Pledges Continued Cooperation with the U.S. Amid Troop Reductions

Berlin, May 4: German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has affirmed that, despite recent verbal tensions with U.S. President Donald Trump, Germany will maintain its cooperation with the United States.

The Pentagon announced plans on Friday to withdraw approximately 5,000 American troops from Germany. Prior to this announcement, Chancellor Merz stated that the U.S. lacks a concrete military plan regarding Iran and is facing humiliation from Iranian leadership.

In an interview with public broadcaster ARD, Merz confirmed that the U.S. will not currently deploy Tomahawk cruise missiles in Germany. However, he believes this plan has not been permanently shelved.

The commitment to the Tomahawk weapon system was initially made by former U.S. President Joe Biden in 2024 to strengthen European deterrence. Following the troop reduction announcement, several U.S. media outlets reported that plans to bolster European forces had also been canceled.

Merz remarked, “The Americans currently do not have enough troops.” He emphasized that the United States is Germany’s most crucial partner in NATO, asserting that the decision to withdraw troops is unrelated to Trump’s previous criticisms.

President Trump had previously indicated plans to withdraw more than the 5,000 troops mentioned by the Pentagon earlier this week. Before boarding Air Force One in Florida, he told the media, “We are going to cut back significantly, and we are reducing by more than 5,000.”

In response to Merz’s comments, Trump criticized him, stating that the Chancellor does not understand the situation and is indifferent to Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

On Wednesday, Trump posted on social media that the U.S. is considering reducing troop numbers in Germany, with a decision expected soon. He also mentioned that he might decrease the presence of American troops in Spain and Italy.

Trump stated, “Why shouldn’t I? Italy has not helped at all. Spain’s attitude has also been very poor.” He reiterated his criticism of European allies for not assisting in U.S.-Israel attacks against Iran.
