Celebrating the 259th Birth Anniversary of Saint Tyagaraja: A Call to Preserve Cultural Heritage

Hyderabad, May 4: Andhra Pradesh‘s Deputy Chief Minister and actor Pawan Kalyan paid tribute to Saint Tyagaraja on the occasion of his 259th birth anniversary. He urged for the preservation of the musical legacy of one of India’s greatest composer-saints.

On social media platform X, Pawan Kalyan expressed, “On this sacred occasion of Saint Tyagaraja’s 259th birth anniversary, I humbly pay my respects to one of India’s greatest composer-saints. His music transformed devotion into an eternal spiritual path and enriched the cultural soul of India.”

Born in Kakarlapadu village of Prakasam district, Saint Tyagaraja is a symbol of pride for Telugu speakers. He elevated Carnatic classical music to new heights. His compositions are filled with devotion and philosophical depth. Saint Tyagaraja is one of the renowned ‘Trinity’ of Carnatic music, alongside Muthuswami Dikshitar and Syama Sastri. Inspired by Purandara Dasa and devoted to Lord Rama, he dedicated his entire life to musical practice.

Traditionally, Saint Tyagaraja is said to have composed around 24,000 works, but currently, only about 730 are available. Of these, only around 400 are actively performed. Pawan Kalyan expressed concern, stating that it is our collective duty to preserve this invaluable musical heritage for future generations. His famous compositions like ‘Jagadananda Karaka’, ‘Endaro Mahanubhavulu’, ‘Bantu Reethi Koluvu’, ‘Samaswaragamana’, and ‘Nagumomu’ continue to attract music lovers beyond language and borders.

Legendary artists such as M.S. Subbulakshmi, Mangalampalli Balamuralikrishna, Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer, and D.K. Pattammal have popularized these works globally. Pawan Kalyan referenced the devotion witnessed during the Tyagaraja Aradhana in Chennai and Thiruvaiyaru, emphasizing that Andhra Pradesh should celebrate its cultural heritage with equal reverence. He also highlighted the importance of preserving the legacies of other Telugu saint-poets like Bammera Potana and Annamacharya.

For preservation, Pawan Kalyan proposed two significant initiatives. The first is to organize a state-level ‘Tyagaraja Aradhana Utsav’ in Andhra Pradesh, inviting musicians, scholars, and devotees from across India and abroad. The second is to launch a comprehensive digitization campaign for Saint Tyagaraja’s manuscripts, musical notations, rare recordings, and oral traditions. He believes that only through the collective efforts of the government, cultural institutions, and society can the legacy of this great saint be preserved and promoted.
