Major Political Shift in Tamil Nadu as Actor-Politician Vijays Party Takes Lead

Chennai, May 4: Early trends from the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections indicate a significant political upheaval. By 10 AM, Vijay’s party, Tamilga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), has shown a remarkable lead. The ruling DMK has slipped to third place behind the AIADMK.

According to the Election Commission of India, TVK is leading in 62 assembly seats as of the morning trends. The AIADMK, an ally of the BJP, is in second place with leads in 51 seats. Meanwhile, MK Stalin’s DMK is ahead in only 27 seats.

The counting of votes began at 8 AM in Tamil Nadu. Initially, postal ballots were counted for the first half hour, followed by the counting of EVM votes starting at 8:30 AM. Amid the early leads, TVK’s election management secretary, Adhav Arjun, arrived at the counting center at Loyola College to celebrate their success.

During the counting process, former DMK MP Kanimozhi NVN Somu stated, “We are just waiting for the final results to see what will actually happen.”

The elections for the 234-seat assembly were held in a single phase on April 23. The Election Commission reported that approximately 48 million votes were cast, resulting in a voter turnout of 85.1%. For the first time in the last four assembly elections, the share of women voters in Tamil Nadu exceeded 80% in 2026.

Vote counting is taking place across 62 designated counting centers statewide, including all 75,064 polling stations, which also include postal ballots. Around 125,000 security personnel are deployed, and QR code-based photo identification is mandatory for all officials and observers entering the counting centers and halls.
