TMC Struggles in Bengal Elections as BJP Leads in Four Districts

Kolkata, May 4: Significant shifts are emerging in the counting trends of the West Bengal Assembly elections 2026. Among the 293 seats being counted, four districts show no signs of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) making any gains.

The districts where TMC appears to be struggling are Alipurduar and Jalpaiguri in North Bengal, along with Jhargram and West Bardhaman in South Bengal.

As of 10:30 AM, trends indicate that BJP candidates are leading in all four assembly seats in Jhargram district. These seats include Nayagram, Gopiballavpur, Jhargram, and Binpur (ST).

Jhargram is part of the tribal-dominated Jungle Mahal region, which was once a bastion for the Left Front. However, since 2011, it has become a stronghold for the TMC. In the last years of the Left Front’s rule, this area was also known for Maoist activities.

In Alipurduar district, BJP is maintaining its lead across five seats, which include Kumargram (ST), Kalchini (ST), Alipurduar, Falakata (SC), and Madarihat (ST).

Similarly, in Jalpaiguri district, BJP candidates are ahead in all seven seats, including Dhupguri (SC), Maynaguri (SC), Jalpaiguri (SC), Rajganj (SC), Dabgram-Fulbari, Mal (ST), and Nagarakata (ST).

Both Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar are located in the Terai and Dooars regions of West Bengal, where tribal and Rajbanshi voters play a crucial role in the electoral outcomes.

In West Bardhaman district, BJP is also leading in all seven seats, including Pandabeswar, Durgapur East, Durgapur West, Raniganj, Jamuria, Asansol South, and Asansol North. Notably, BJP’s current MLA and fashion designer-turned-politician Agnimitra Paul is leading in the Asansol South seat. West Bardhaman is known for its coal mining and steel industry.

During the election campaign, Prime Minister Narendra Modi claimed that this time, several districts in West Bengal would see TMC failing to open its account. The initial trends seem to support this assertion.
