Patna, May 4: The Vikramshila Bridge, a crucial link connecting Bhagalpur to North Bihar, suffered significant damage late Sunday night. In response, the Bihar State Bridge Construction Corporation has recommended using the Shri Krishna Singh Bridge in Munger and the Ganga River bridge in Khagaria as alternative routes to connect South and North Bihar.
Dr. Chandrashekhar Singh, president of the Bihar State Bridge Construction Corporation, stated in a press conference on Monday that it may take three months to repair the fallen span of the Vikramshila Bridge. He also noted that vehicle operations on the new bridge being constructed parallel to the Vikramshila Bridge over the Ganga River are expected to commence by December this year.
Dr. Chandrashekhar praised the Bhagalpur district administration for their vigilance following the bridge’s collapse, acknowledging that without their prompt action, the incident could have been much more severe. As a result of the incident, the executive engineer of the bridge construction corporation has been suspended.
He admitted that the bridge was under heavy traffic pressure. A team from Patna had recently inspected the bridge, revealing several deficiencies. The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Patna will also assist in the repair work. Dr. Chandrashekhar mentioned that vehicles heading to North Bihar will need to use the Shri Krishna Singh Bridge in Munger, while those coming from North Bihar to Bhagalpur will utilize the Ganga bridge in Khagaria.
Currently, there are no plans to construct a temporary bridge between Bhagalpur and Naugachia due to the impending monsoon season. However, a steamer service is set to begin soon for vehicles traveling from Naugachia to Bhagalpur. Upon learning of the incident, Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary contacted Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh for assistance from the Border Roads Organisation in the repair efforts. The Defence Minister assured him of all possible support.
The incident occurred around 12:30 AM on Sunday when subsidence began near pole number 133, prompting immediate traffic closure. Shortly thereafter, that section of the bridge completely collapsed.
