Beijing, March 13: On March 12, China observed National Tree Planting Day. According to data from the Chinese National Forestry and Grassland Administration, the country’s forest area has now exceeded 2.4 million square kilometers. The coverage rate has reached 25.09 percent, with a total stock of over 20.99 billion cubic meters. There are approximately 142.6 billion trees across the nation, averaging 100 trees per person. Remarkably, China accounts for a quarter of the world’s newly added green areas, with technology playing a crucial role in this achievement.
Yang Tingtong, a deputy researcher at the Chinese Academy of Forestry, stated that AI can help determine the spread, area, and quality of forests, ensuring maximum benefits from investments.
In Gansu Province, drones are utilized to transport straw and plants in cities like Qingyang and Wuwei. Meanwhile, in the sandy lands of Shaanxi Province, members of the desertification control team operate trenching and planting machines equipped with Peito navigation systems, capturing images based on satellite remote sensing. The area under desertification control is expanding daily.
China is transforming its forests from merely “planting more trees” to “planting better trees,” turning them into “reservoirs, treasures, granaries, and carbon warehouses.” This shift has not only improved the ecological environment but has also fostered the growth of the green industry.
