Washington, May 19: US Congressman Ro Khanna stated that India is emerging as a significant global power. Therefore, it should not limit itself to enhancing its economic and strategic strength but also take on greater responsibilities in international affairs.
Speaking at the Capitol Hill Summit 2026 organized by the US-India Friendship Council, Khanna emphasized that the growing influence of India in the world comes with increased expectations for responsibility.
During a discussion on defense, technology, and energy cooperation, Khanna remarked, “India must decide how it wants to position itself in this new role of leadership. If you aspire to be a global power, you cannot shy away from responsibilities.”
Khanna specifically referenced the ongoing war in Ukraine, noting that India could play a crucial role in mediating an end to the conflict, given its longstanding good relations with Russia.
“I have openly stated both in India and here in the US that India can play a constructive role in ending the Ukraine war. Its channels of communication with Russia remain open,” he said.
He pointed out that India previously adopted a non-aligned policy, avoiding clear stances on global issues. However, in today’s world, India must take a more definitive position on major international matters.
Khanna acknowledged India’s ambitions, highlighting it as the world’s fastest-growing economy. He stressed that India must now determine what it wants to become.
Despite recent tensions over tariffs and trade policies during the Trump administration, Khanna affirmed that the fundamental strategic thinking behind US-India relations remains strong.
He stated that there has been no fundamental shift in our long-term strategic interests.
According to Khanna, both Democrats and Republicans in the US Congress support a robust partnership with India, particularly in defense, technology, and Indo-Pacific security matters.
He concluded by emphasizing the importance of the values underpinning US-India relations. Will it be merely a coalition based on nationalism? Khanna urged both democratic nations to work together to strengthen pluralism, democracy, and international cooperation. He added that the US must foster a multicultural democracy and collaborate with India in that spirit.
