Government Approves ₹1,200 Crore Rail Infrastructure Projects for Jammu-Katra and Howrah-Delhi Corridors

New Delhi, May 19: The Ministry of Railways announced on Tuesday that the government has approved rail infrastructure projects worth ₹1,200 crore aimed at enhancing safety, connectivity, and operational efficiency on the Jammu-Katra and Howrah-Delhi corridors.

The ministry reported that ₹238 crore has been allocated for stabilizing slopes, rehabilitating tunnels, and protecting bridges in the Jammu-Sri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra section of Northern Railway.

The statement further detailed that the approved works include slope stabilization, rehabilitation measures, addressing water leakage issues in tunnels, bridge safety enhancements, and other security-related tasks at sensitive locations.

Union Rail Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasized that these projects reflect the government’s commitment to ensuring safe and reliable rail connectivity in some of the country’s most challenging regions.

He noted that after a comprehensive assessment of cutting, bridges, and tunnels, the approval for preservation and rehabilitation works aims to enhance the long-term safety and reliability of this strategically important rail section.

The Jammu-Katra section has faced numerous engineering and operational challenges due to difficult terrain, adverse geological conditions, and inclement weather.

According to the government, the new safety and rehabilitation measures will strengthen this route, improving the safety of millions of passengers traveling annually.

In another decision, the government also approved the 54-kilometer Kiul-Jhajha third line project, which will cost ₹962 crore.

This project is part of the high-density Howrah-Delhi corridor and aims to increase rail capacity, improve operational efficiency, and enhance the movement of passenger and freight trains in Eastern and Northern India.

The Ministry of Railways stated that the existing double line section between Kiul and Jhajha is currently operating under excessive pressure and is expected to see increased traffic in the coming years.

The proposed third line project will significantly improve line capacity, reduce congestion, and facilitate smoother movement for both passenger and freight trains.

Additionally, this route connects the ports of Kolkata and Haldia to Raxaul in Bihar, located near the Nepal border. This corridor also handles heavy freight traffic linked to major industrial establishments such as Barh STPP, Jawahar STPP, and Birgunj ICD.
