New Delhi, May 19: Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge criticized the central government on Tuesday for the recent increase in petrol and diesel prices. He accused the government of shifting the burden of its policy failures onto the common people.
Kharge’s remarks came after state-owned oil marketing companies raised fuel prices for the second time in less than a week, amid rising global crude oil prices.
On the social media platform ‘X’, Kharge stated, “Just four days after the last hike, the Modi government has increased petrol and diesel prices again. They are trying to shift the burden of their failures onto the public while pretending to promote savings.”
Targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi over India’s oil imports and foreign policy, Kharge remarked that the Prime Minister, who boasts of being a global leader, has sought a one-month extension to purchase Russian oil from the U.S. He emphasized that such actions undermine the dignity of 1.4 billion Indians, a precedent not set by any previous government. He questioned why, if the government claims to have received ‘permission’ for such actions, the burden of fuel prices still falls on the common people.
Kharge reiterated that the BJP lacks vision and leadership. He accused the party of being preoccupied with elections during crises while planning to ‘loot’ the public with sweet talk.
He added that merely engaging in foreign-sponsored public relations does not make one a global leader. “Modi ji, accountability to the public is essential. Don’t evade real questions. Issues like ‘how do you eat mangoes’ and ‘which tonic do you drink’ are irrelevant. If you want to be called the true ‘Prime Servant’ of the people, you must address what you are doing to tackle this crisis; otherwise, you will remain just a ‘promoter’.”
