Baramulla, May 19: The Baramulla police have intensified their crackdown on drug trafficking, achieving another significant success. A team from the Shiri police station apprehended two drug traffickers during a patrol in the Fatehgarh area, seizing a substance resembling cannabis from their possession.
According to police reports, the team set up a checkpoint in Fatehgarh and detained a suspicious individual. Upon searching him, they discovered two sticks of the cannabis-like substance wrapped in corn husks. The suspect was identified as Sajjad Ahmad Malik, son of Abdul Jabbar Malik, a resident of Fatehgarh.
Following further inquiries and revelations from Sajjad, police arrested another suspect, Mohammad Shafi Lone, son of Abdul Jabbar Lone, a resident of Malpora. Mohammad Shafi works as a driver for the SRTC bus service; during his search, one stick of the cannabis-like substance was also found.
Initial investigations revealed that Shafi Lone allegedly used the government SRTC bus for the purchase, sale, and transportation of narcotics. This development adds gravity to the case. An FIR under Section 8/20 of the NDPS Act has been registered at the Shiri police station, and questioning of both suspects is ongoing. Authorities anticipate uncovering additional members of this trafficking network.
The Baramulla police issued a press release stating that efforts to eradicate the drug menace are ongoing. They urged the public to report any information regarding drug trafficking or criminal activities in their areas immediately.
In recent months, several drug trafficking cases have emerged in Baramulla district. Local residents express concern over the rising addiction among youth, which is impacting social order. While the police’s success has brought relief to the community, there is a strong demand for dismantling the larger trafficking networks.
Senior police officials in Baramulla emphasized a zero-tolerance policy towards NDPS cases, promising strict action against such traffickers.
