ISIs Scheme to Smuggle Fake Currency into India Using Drones Raises Alarm

New Delhi, May 19: Indian agencies have raised alarms regarding a scheme by Pakistan’s ISI to spread counterfeit currency across India. The most concerning areas are the Tripura-Bangladesh border and Punjab.

Courier services are being used to transport fake notes into India from the Bangladesh border, while the threat in Punjab is escalating rapidly due to drone usage.

An official revealed that the ISI has adopted a dual strategy concerning counterfeit Indian currency. On one hand, they aim to damage the Indian economy, and on the other, they seek to fund terrorist organizations in Pakistan.

The official noted that the issue is more severe along the India-Bangladesh border compared to Punjab.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) is at the forefront of addressing this issue. The NIA is working to prevent this threat at the border while also investigating multiple cases within West Bengal. Their primary focus is on Malda, where several units printing fake notes have been uncovered.

An Intelligence Bureau official indicated that the ISI may increasingly rely on drones to send counterfeit currency in the future. So far, nearly all attempts to drop fake notes via drones have been thwarted.

However, the official cautioned that this is not the time for complacency, as these attempts could merely be ‘dry runs’ to assess security measures and identify vulnerabilities.

The quantity of counterfeit notes seized so far has been relatively low. The official stated that once these operatives succeed in evading security systems, they will likely attempt to send larger quantities of fake notes via drones.

Another official emphasized the need to shut down the fake currency units in West Bengal first. They argued that eliminating the Malda module would significantly reduce the problem.

Afterward, attention can shift to the borders from which counterfeit notes are smuggled into India. According to officials, the ISI is aware that security agencies closely monitor couriers transporting fake notes.

As the NIA intensifies its efforts, the ISI may fully transition to a drone network to send counterfeit currency into India.

Investigative agencies warn that this challenge is set to grow significantly. The use of drones in this counterfeit currency racket could pose a major test for security agencies.

The Border Security Force has successfully intercepted drugs, weapons, and ammunition dropped via drones. However, dealing with counterfeit notes may prove to be more complex.
