Washington, 12 December (Daily Kiran) – A new development has emerged in the murder case of an 83-year-old woman in Connecticut, USA. The family of the deceased has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, and its partner Microsoft. The family alleges that the artificial intelligence-based chatbot misled the accused son, prompting him to kill his mother.
According to reports by The Washington Post and France’s Le Monde, the accused, 56-year-old Stein-Erik Solberg, took his own life after killing his mother. Court documents state that Solberg had prior mental health issues. He reportedly told ChatGPT that the printer in his mother’s home office could be a surveillance device used to spy on him. It is claimed that the chatbot agreed with this theory. The lawsuit demands substantial financial compensation and an order directing OpenAI to implement safety measures in ChatGPT.
Police informed that in August, Stein-Erik Solberg brutally assaulted and strangled his mother, Suzanne Adams, to death at their home in Greenwich, Connecticut, before committing suicide. Adams’ family filed the lawsuit on Thursday at the California Superior Court in San Francisco. The suit also alleges that OpenAI refused to provide the family with the full chat history. An OpenAI spokesperson described the incident as “an incredibly heartbreaking situation” and said they would review the filing to understand the details.
