Washington, May 21: President Donald Trump has hinted at a possible change in U.S. policy regarding Cuba. He defended his administration’s handling of regional conflicts and domestic investigations during a press briefing. Trump also mentioned that negotiations with Iran are in the final stages, warning of a tougher stance if no agreement is reached.
His comments on Cuba come amid federal prosecutors filing charges against Cuban revolutionary leader Raul Castro. Additionally, the U.S. Southern Command announced that the Nimitz Carrier Strike Group, which includes an aircraft carrier, its air wing, and at least one guided-missile destroyer, has arrived in the Caribbean region.
During a conversation with reporters on Wednesday, Trump described Cuba as a failed state and indicated that a significant announcement regarding the island nation could be forthcoming.
He noted that many have been waiting for this moment for 65 years, referring to Cuban-Americans and their families who have endured decades of tension between Washington and Havana.
Trump stated that Cuban-Americans have shown him support as high as 94 percent, emphasizing that this issue is deeply emotional for many families in Florida. “They have no food, no electricity, and no energy left, but the people there are very good,” he remarked.
When asked how long U.S. sanctions on Cuba would remain in place, he replied, “We’ll see. We will announce it very soon.”
The president assured that tensions regarding Cuba would not escalate further, as the situation there is already dire. “The entire country is in disarray,” he added.
On the ongoing negotiations with Iran, Trump mentioned that the current Iranian negotiators are more pragmatic than their predecessors. “We are dealing with people who are wiser and more practical than before. They prefer dialogue over war,” he stated.
He expressed that if he could delay conflict for a few days to save lives, it would be a positive outcome.
Dismissing reports of easing sanctions on Iran during negotiations, Trump asserted, “I will not provide any relief until they sign the agreement.”
Regarding the impact of artificial intelligence on jobs, Trump claimed that despite global tensions, the U.S. economy remains strong. He noted that more people are employed now than ever before, with job levels at a record high.
Trump also defended recent military operations related to Iran, asserting that U.S. blockades have prevented any oil shipments from passing through the Strait.
