Chennai, May 21: For the first time in nearly six decades, Congress is set to become a part of the Tamil Nadu Cabinet. Two party MLAs will take their oaths as ministers on Thursday in the government led by the Tamilga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK).
This announcement came after Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge approved the inclusion of MLAs S. Rajesh Kumar and P. Vishwanathan in the state cabinet headed by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay.
This move is seen as a significant step in the changing political landscape of Tamil Nadu and a crucial means to strengthen the coalition supporting the TVK government.
Confirming the development through social media, AICC General Secretary K.C. Venugopal described it as a historic moment for the party, stating, “This is a historic opportunity for us as Congress joins the Tamil Nadu Cabinet after a long gap of 59 years.”
He also extended his best wishes to both leaders, expressing confidence that they would work towards fulfilling the aspirations of the people of Tamil Nadu while promoting a welfare-oriented governance model.
Currently, Congress has five MLAs in the Tamil Nadu Assembly and has emerged as a key supporting force for the TVK government following the recent assembly elections.
The support from Congress, along with other coalition partners such as leftist parties, VCK, and IUML, has significantly helped Vijay’s administration surpass the majority mark in the assembly.
Political observers consider the inclusion of Congress ministers to be a strategic move, far more important than a routine cabinet expansion. It is viewed as a calculated step by the TVK leadership to strengthen coalition management and provide greater representation to allied parties while maintaining political stability.
