
New Delhi, May 21: In a thrilling encounter of IPL 2026, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) defeated Mumbai Indians (MI) by four wickets. KKR’s fast bowler Karthik Tyagi played a crucial role, taking two wickets and securing his spot among the top five bowlers in the Purple Cap race.
So far in IPL 2026, Tyagi has claimed 18 wickets across 13 matches. The Purple Cap is currently held by Bhuvneshwar Kumar of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), who has taken 24 wickets in the same number of matches. Following him is Kagiso Rabada from Gujarat Titans with 21 wickets.
Anshul Kamboj from Chennai Super Kings has also made his mark, taking 20 wickets in 13 matches, placing him third in the list of highest wicket-takers. Jofra Archer stands fourth with 18 wickets, while Karthik Tyagi rounds out the top five.
On the batting front, the Orange Cap is adorned by 15-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi of Rajasthan Royals, who has scored 579 runs at a strike rate of 236 in 13 matches.
Mitchell Marsh from Lucknow Super Giants follows with 563 runs, while Heinrich Klaasen from Sunrisers Hyderabad is third with 555 runs. Sai Sudharsan from Gujarat Titans has also been impressive, scoring 554 runs at a strike rate of 157, placing him fourth. Shubman Gill, the captain of Gujarat Titans, is fifth with 552 runs.
The match took place at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, where KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane won the toss and opted to field first. MI managed to score 147 runs for the loss of eight wickets in their 20 overs, with Corbin Bosch top-scoring at 32 runs, and Hardik Pandya contributing 26 runs. Key players like Rohit Sharma, Ryan Rickelton, Suryakumar Yadav, and Tilak Varma failed to make significant impacts.
KKR successfully chased down the target of 148 runs in 18.5 overs, losing six wickets. Manish Pandey played a vital innings, scoring 45 runs off 33 balls, while Rovman Powell added 40 runs from 30 balls. This victory keeps KKR’s playoff hopes alive.
