
Thane, May 21: A devastating fire broke out early Thursday morning in Thane, Maharashtra, resulting in the deaths of two individuals. Officials from the Thane Municipal Corporation reported that two others suffered severe burns and were taken to the hospital for treatment.
The fire ignited around 3:45 AM at the Govind Devi Vegetable Market located on Gokhale Road in the Naupada area of Thane. Due to the late hour, residents were unaware of the blaze until it had spread significantly.
The towering flames and thick smoke from the burning stalls created panic in the vicinity. Local residents alerted the fire department after realizing the extent of the fire. Reports indicate that the market housed not only vegetable stalls but also several clothing vendors.
Upon receiving the distress call, six fire engines rushed to the scene to combat the flames. Tragically, during the firefighting efforts, two individuals succumbed to their injuries. The deceased were identified as Sagar Shinde (43), a station officer with the Thane Fire Brigade, and Kalu Shankar Gadekar (53), a security guard for the municipal corporation.
Additionally, two firefighters were injured in the incident. They have been identified as Sujit Pashté (45), a station officer, and Samir Jadhav (40), a firefighter. Both are currently hospitalized at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital, where they are receiving treatment.
As of now, the cause of the fire remains unknown, and officials are conducting a thorough investigation into the incident.
