
Rome, May 20: Prime Minister Narendra Modi received the esteemed ‘Agricola Medal’ from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) during a ceremony held at its headquarters in Rome, Italy. This award is the highest honor bestowed by the FAO.
The Director-General of the FAO presented the medal to Prime Minister Modi in the historic FAO Plenary Hall. According to the organization, this recognition is for his contributions to food security, agricultural development, and the welfare of farmers.
While congratulating the Prime Minister, Qu Dongyu stated that this honor reflects Modi’s commitment to enhancing agricultural productivity, strengthening food security, and improving the lives of farmers.
He also praised India’s collaboration with the FAO in fighting hunger and poverty, promoting universal food security, and advancing the United Nations’ sustainable development goals.
The FAO chief commended Modi’s leadership in transforming India’s agricultural system through farmer-centric and technology-driven initiatives. He highlighted India’s significant food and agriculture programs, noting that since the COVID-19 pandemic, nearly 800 million people have received food assistance, and over 110 million farmers have benefited from direct financial support.
Qu Dongyu acknowledged India’s efforts to promote natural and sustainable farming. He praised the initiative to globally promote nutritious millets through the ‘International Year of Millets’ in collaboration with the FAO.
He also emphasized the importance of India’s focus on digital public infrastructure during its G20 presidency, stating that it has facilitated better access to digital technology and services for developing countries.
The FAO chief remarked that these ongoing efforts have significantly helped lift millions of people out of poverty in India.
