Washington, May 21: The tech community worldwide is in mourning following the passing of S. Soma Somasegar, a prominent Indian-American technology leader and former senior executive at Microsoft. He was renowned for strengthening Microsoft’s developer ecosystem and mentoring a new generation of engineers, startup founders, and investors.
In a statement released by his family, they expressed, “It is with deep sorrow that we share the news of our beloved husband and father, S. Somasegar (affectionately known as Soma), who passed away on May 19, 2026.”
Tributes began pouring in from Silicon Valley and Seattle’s tech industry upon the news of Somasegar’s death at the age of 59. He dedicated nearly 27 years to Microsoft before joining Madrona Venture Group in 2015.
Indian-American entrepreneur and White House AI advisor, Shriram Krishnan, described Somasegar as a mentor who transformed many lives and careers. He wrote on X, “It’s hard to express how profoundly Soma impacted me and Aarti. He recognized us during our college years, helped us land our first jobs, and always made time for junior colleagues despite his senior position at Microsoft.”
Krishnan emphasized that their current lives and careers owe much to Somasegar’s guidance.
UiPath, an automation software company where Somasegar served on the board of directors since September 2024, referred to him as a trusted advisor and exceptional leader. The company stated, “We are deeply saddened by the untimely passing of S. ‘Soma’ Somasegar. Our condolences go out to his wife, Akila, their daughters, and his colleagues at Madrona.”
Journalist Tom Warren noted that Somasegar spent 27 years at Microsoft, where he led the developer division. He also highlighted Somasegar’s significant presence in Seattle’s tech landscape.
Many former Microsoft employees and startup founders described him as a calm yet highly influential figure who played a crucial role in transforming Microsoft into a cloud and developer-centric company.
A lengthy tribute published in GeekWire referred to him as “a true champion of developers and startups,” noting his guidance to numerous founders and investors in Seattle’s tech community.
Somasegar joined Microsoft in January 1989 and later led the developer division, which included major products like Visual Studio and .NET. He was instrumental in establishing the Microsoft India Development Center in Hyderabad in 1998.
Chennai’s College of Engineering Guindy alumnus Chinnu Senthilkumar remarked, “He made significant contributions to Windows NT, initiated the India Development Center in Hyderabad, and supported millions of developers worldwide while leading the developer division.”
Later, Somasegar joined Madrona Venture Group, where he focused on investments related to artificial intelligence, machine learning, cloud infrastructure, and smart applications.
Vijay Raj, CTO of OpenAI Applications, paid tribute to Somasegar in a message to GeekWire, describing him as one of the kindest people he knew. “He always helped others, generously shared his time and experience, and uplifted people just by being around them.”
According to GeekWire, Somasegar’s passing has cast a shadow over Microsoft, Madrona, the startups he worked with, and the countless individuals he supported as a friend, mentor, or investor.
Somasegar studied engineering in Chennai before moving to the United States for higher education, where he graduated from Louisiana State University. He eventually became one of the leading Indian-American tech executives in the Seattle area.
His influence extended beyond Microsoft, making significant contributions to startups, venture capital, AI, cloud computing, and enterprise software companies. Online tributes indicate that he was also involved with the Seattle Orcas cricket franchise.
