New Delhi, May 9: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken significant action against corruption in Odisha, arresting Om Prakash Nayak for accepting a bribe of ₹50,000. The accused allegedly demanded this bribe in exchange for processing a GST refund of ₹1.6 million.
Nayak was serving as a superintendent in the Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) office in Balasore, Odisha.
According to CBI officials, the operation was initiated based on a complaint. The complaint alleged that Nayak and the assistant commissioner of CGST, Balasore, demanded a bribe of ₹50,000 to release the GST refund for the complainant’s company. Following the complaint, the CBI conducted a preliminary investigation and registered a case against the accused for corruption.
The agency then set up a planned trap. With the complainant’s assistance, the CBI successfully apprehended Nayak while he was accepting the bribe. Immediately after the arrest, he was taken into custody for questioning.
CBI officials stated that they are also investigating the roles of other officials involved in the case. The agency is working to determine if there is a larger corruption network behind the bribe solicitation and delays in the refund process. Further investigations are ongoing, and additional questioning of other officials may occur in the coming days.
Earlier, on Thursday, the CBI had arrested a superintendent and a computer operator from the CGST office in Meerut for accepting bribes. The arrested individuals were identified as Sanjay Meena, superintendent of the CGST Range-I office in Meerut, and Yash Sharma, a computer operator.
