Mumbai, June 6: Western Railway has successfully completed a significant improvement project on the Matunga Road and Dadar section to bolster monsoon preparations. This initiative aims to enhance the drainage system, reducing waterlogging issues during heavy rainfall.
The culvert number fourteen A, located near Dadar, serves as a critical drainage point for the area. Previously, the site featured cement concrete box culverts with a diameter of approximately 450 millimeters, which had become clogged over time. The reduced capacity of these culverts hindered the proper flow of rainwater, causing drainage problems.
To address this issue, railway authorities removed the old box culverts and replaced them with larger-sized Hume pipes. The new pipes have a diameter of about 1,200 millimeters, significantly increasing the water flow capacity. Following this upgrade, the drainage flow capacity in the area has reportedly improved by nearly 600%, facilitating faster water discharge during rainfall.
The entire project was completed within the scheduled timeframe and executed safely, considering traffic conditions. There was no major impact on train services or regular rail operations, as the work was carried out during designated time slots. According to railway officials, this enhancement will substantially reduce waterlogging issues in the Matunga Road and Dadar section during the monsoon season.
This initiative by Western Railway is seen as a crucial step in strengthening Mumbai’s monsoon preparedness. It not only enhances the safety of the railway tracks but also promises a better and safer travel experience for passengers during rainy days. The department has indicated that similar improvement projects will continue in various locations to further enhance the overall system’s efficiency.
