Abhishek Banerjee Denies Request for Central Security After Attack in West Bengal

Kolkata, June 6: Abhishek Banerjee, the General Secretary of the Trinamool Congress and a Member of Parliament, has refuted claims that he requested Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) protection for himself. This statement comes after an incident on May 30, when an angry mob attacked him in Sonarpur, located in South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal.

The notion that Banerjee sought CAPF security emerged last week when Ritabrata Banerjee, a former Trinamool Congress MLA, addressed the media regarding the issue. Ritabrata Banerjee now serves as the leader of the Trinamool Congress legislative party in the state assembly and as the official leader of the opposition.

During a press conference on June 2, Ritabrata questioned, “What kind of public leader is he? After the party’s significant defeat on May 4, he stayed at home for 26 days. Now, he is asking for central forces’ protection. He previously claimed that the public would protect him, so why is he seeking security now?” This topic has garnered considerable media attention.

On Saturday, Abhishek Banerjee took to social media to deny any request for CAPF security. He stated, “A section of the media is reporting that I requested central security after the attack on me in Sonarpur on the 30th of last month. This claim is entirely baseless and far from the truth. I have not requested any security in the seven days following the attack.”

In his social media statement, Banerjee emphasized that the incident occurred under the watch of both the central and state governments, and they must answer serious questions related to the circumstances surrounding it.

He expressed his disappointment over the alarming rise in incidents of rape and other heinous crimes against women in West Bengal over the past month, noting that the state administration has largely ignored these occurrences.

Banerjee’s statement concluded, “The primary priority of those in governance should be the safety of the people. I urge the security agencies of both the state and central governments to focus on the safety of West Bengal’s citizens rather than promoting misinformation and politically motivated narratives through certain media outlets. The people deserve safety, accountability, and truth.”
