Tehran, June 6: Iran has accused the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) of engaging in political maneuvering. The country urged that if the IAEA wishes to be part of a diplomatic solution, it should refrain from using its technical reports as “weapons of political pressure.”
Kazem Gharibabadi, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs, stated on the social media platform X that inspection and security arrangements cannot be strengthened unless there is a commitment to impartiality, adherence to international law, respect for national sovereignty, and a clear condemnation of attacks on monitored nuclear facilities.
Gharibabadi criticized IAEA Director Rafael Grossi for discussing the reduction and ambiguity of Iran’s nuclear program without acknowledging the attacks from the United States and Israel as contributing factors.
He emphasized that nuclear security cannot be enhanced merely through military actions, threats, or the passage of resolutions. True strength, according to him, arises from fairness and respect for established rules.
Furthermore, Gharibabadi asserted that bombing nuclear sites under international monitoring, undermining access and security, and then using the consequences of those attacks as “uncertainty” against Iran is unjustifiable.
The Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister alleged that the IAEA chief operates under the influence of the United States and Western nations. He questioned how the agency can maintain impartiality under such circumstances.
Gharibabadi pointed out that the repeated mention of “60 percent” uranium enrichment in IAEA reports and the presentation of potential weapon-related scenarios, without clear legal context, appears to be more political than technical.
He noted that the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) does not set a specific limit on the percentage of uranium enrichment. Legally, the primary criterion is that nuclear materials and activities should not be used for military purposes.
Gharibabadi claimed that Iran’s nuclear program has always been entirely peaceful, and the country has consistently operated within its legal commitments.
He further stated that while the agency reports on damage to nuclear facilities caused by military attacks, it ignores the accountability of those responsible for such assaults. If the same agency expects Iran to bear the costs of insecurity and technical obstacles resulting from these attacks, it is deemed unreasonable.
