Patna, June 6: For any mentor, the most joyful moment comes when a disciple achieves great success and brings glory to the nation. At just 15 years old, left-handed batsman Vaibhav Suryavanshi has made headlines in the cricketing world with his explosive batting. His selection for the Indian T20 team has brought immense pride to his coach, Manish Ojha.
In an exclusive conversation following Vaibhav’s selection, Ojha stated, “This is a proud moment for me and all of Bihar. A new star has emerged in India. I wish him and his family all the best.”
Ojha noted, “Vaibhav has been given a chance only in the T20 format for now. However, based on his performance in the Under-19 World Cup and IPL, if he maintains this level in upcoming tours, he will secure a spot in the ODI and Test teams as well.”
He further added, “Sachin Tendulkar is a legendary player who debuted for the Indian team at a very young age. We were inspired by Sachin to pursue cricket. Vaibhav has now achieved a place in the Indian team at an even younger age. Like Sachin, he is becoming immensely popular and is viewed as a role model. He has become the poster boy of Indian cricket, inspiring young children to take up the sport.”
Ojha expressed hope that Vaibhav would match Sachin’s performance in the future. “Sachin Tendulkar is like a god in the cricketing world. Vaibhav has been given this opportunity at a young age. If he stays focused on cricket and his performance, I believe he will emerge as a major star and serve Indian cricket for a long time.”
During a discussion after the IPL, Ojha mentioned, “The IPL is a significant platform. Vaibhav’s performance was outstanding, though he missed completing centuries in several innings. We discussed what could have been done during those moments. We also talked about his preparations for the A team’s ODI triangular series in Sri Lanka.”
In IPL 2026, Vaibhav played for Rajasthan Royals (RR), scoring 776 runs in 16 matches, including one century and five half-centuries, earning him the Orange Cap. His selection for the Indian T20 team was widely anticipated, and the BCCI confirmed it by including him in the squad for the tours to Ireland and England, as well as the Asian Games, validating his extraordinary talent on an international level.
Vaibhav is now the youngest player to be selected for the Indian team, achieving this at the age of 15 years and 71 days. Sachin Tendulkar played his first international match at 16 years and 205 days. Vaibhav may very well break this record.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi hails from Samastipur district in Bihar.
