Budget Boosts AYUSH Healthcare, India Set to Become Global Hub

New Delhi, February 2: The budget announcements have linked health policy with rural livelihoods, export growth, youth employment, and entrepreneurship, aiming to make India a global centre for scientifically based integrated healthcare. This was stated by Union Minister of State for AYUSH, Prataprao Jadhav, on Monday.

The minister highlighted that the budget includes key measures to strengthen the AYUSH system—comprising Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy. These initiatives reflect the government’s strong vision to build a comprehensive, inclusive, and competitive healthcare system globally, with AYUSH playing a major role.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced several major steps in the budget related to AYUSH education, research, quality control, global leadership, medical tourism, and skill development.

According to Prataprao Jadhav, these efforts will promote traditional medicine’s role in disease prevention, economic progress, and enhancing India’s global identity.

The budget proposes the establishment of three new All India Institutes of Ayurveda (AIIA), which will enhance undergraduate and postgraduate education, advanced research, and quality treatment facilities.

These institutions are expected to raise education standards nationwide and strengthen integrated care based on scientific principles.

Upgrading AYUSH pharmacies and drug testing laboratories is also part of the budget plan to meet higher certification standards.

This will improve the quality of AYUSH products, build public trust, boost exports, and benefit farmers cultivating medicinal plants as well as MSME companies producing these medicines.

The WHO Global Centre for Traditional Medicine in Jamnagar will be further developed to promote research, international training, and policy dialogue, positioning India as a global knowledge hub for traditional medicine.

Additionally, AYUSH centres will be integrated into five proposed regional medical value tourism hubs, combining modern treatment with traditional therapies, wellness services, and rehabilitation.

The caregiver training programme under the National Skills Qualifications Framework (NSQF) will now include yoga and wellness skills, aiming to train 1.5 lakh caregivers next year to strengthen elder care and preventive health services.
