Noida, May 20: The National Capital Region (NCR) is currently grappling with extreme heat and a heatwave. Following the issuance of an orange alert by the meteorological department, residents are facing increasing discomfort. In areas including Delhi, Noida, Greater Noida, and Ghaziabad, maximum temperatures have soared above 45 degrees Celsius, with nighttime temperatures offering little relief.
The intense sunlight, hot winds, and humid conditions have severely impacted daily life. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the heatwave is expected to persist in NCR for several more days. The department has warned that strong hot winds will blow during the afternoon, with the heat lingering into the evening.
Experts advise people to venture outside only when absolutely necessary. Special caution is urged for the elderly, children, and those with health issues. The oppressive heat has led to reduced foot traffic on the streets, with markets and public spaces appearing deserted during the afternoons. Many individuals are now compelled to cover their heads and carry water bottles when stepping outside.
Hospitals are witnessing an uptick in cases of heatstroke, dehydration, and respiratory issues. Meanwhile, the air quality index (AQI) has shown some deterioration. In the Loni area of Ghaziabad, an AQI of 339 was recorded, categorizing it as extremely poor. The AQI in Ved Vihar-Loni was noted at 312, and 274 in Sanjay Nagar.
In Greater Noida, the AQI in Knowledge Park-3 and Knowledge Park-5 was recorded at 269 and 280, respectively, both falling into the poor category. Several areas in Delhi also report AQI levels ranging from moderate to poor. Experts warn that the combination of rising temperatures and pollution could have serious health implications for residents.
Doctors recommend staying hydrated, avoiding sun exposure, and wearing light clothing. Authorities are continuously urging the public to remain vigilant and adopt measures to protect themselves from the heat. According to the meteorological department, the likelihood of relief from the heat in the coming days remains low, indicating that residents of NCR may have to endure more sweltering conditions.
