Severe Heatwave Strikes Rajasthan, Yellow and Orange Alerts Issued for 18 Districts

Jaipur, May 20: Rajasthan continues to endure a severe heatwave, with Chittorgarh recording the highest temperature in the state at 46.3 degrees Celsius over the past 24 hours. The Meteorological Department has issued an ‘Orange Alert’ for two districts due to extreme heat conditions expected on Wednesday, while 16 other districts are under a ‘Yellow Alert’ as scorching temperatures and warm nights persist across much of the state.

Temperatures in several districts of Rajasthan have soared above 44 degrees Celsius, with intense heat affecting both the western and eastern regions throughout the day. According to the Meteorological Department, nearly all districts in Rajasthan, except Sirohi, recorded daytime temperatures ranging from 40 to 47 degrees Celsius. Northwestern Rajasthan has been particularly hard hit by this ongoing heatwave.

The department has warned that similar heat conditions are likely to persist in northeastern and western Rajasthan for the next three to four days. For Wednesday, an ‘Orange Alert’ has been issued for two districts, while 16 districts remain under a ‘Yellow Alert’.

In the capital, Jaipur, the heatwave continued for the second consecutive day, with a maximum temperature of 43.2 degrees Celsius and an unusually high minimum temperature of 31.3 degrees Celsius, making the nights warmer than those in desert cities like Barmer and Jaisalmer. Weather conditions in Jaipur are expected to remain similar over the next two to three days.

In response to the extreme heat, special arrangements have been made at the Jaipur Zoo, where sprinklers have been installed in the emu enclosure to protect the animals from rising temperatures.

Udaipur experienced slight relief compared to Monday, although temperatures remained high. On Tuesday, the city recorded a maximum of 41.7 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 25.6 degrees Celsius, down from 43.3 degrees Celsius and 29 degrees Celsius the previous day. Despite this slight drop, intense sunlight and hot winds continued to trouble residents, leaving streets and markets nearly deserted during the afternoon.

Ajmer also faced extreme heat, with maximum temperatures reaching 41.8 degrees Celsius and minimums at 29.3 degrees Celsius. Officials noted that the temperature difference between day and night has decreased, leading to hot winds even at night. The Meteorological Department has forecast dry weather for the Ajmer division for the coming week, with strong winds expected at speeds of 20 to 30 kilometers per hour.

To provide some relief from the heat, the fire department has deployed water tankers to spray water on roads throughout the city.

The entire Shekhawati region, including Sikar, has been under the grip of a severe heatwave for the sixth consecutive day. Residents have faced relentless heat and hot winds, with maximum temperatures recorded at 43.5 degrees Celsius and minimums at 25.9 degrees Celsius. The Meteorological Department predicts dry weather in this area for the next four days, with no immediate relief in sight.

On Tuesday, Jodhpur recorded a maximum temperature of 43 degrees Celsius. The humidity has further exacerbated discomfort for residents, prompting the Meteorological Department to issue a heat alert for the city over the next three days.
