Abhay Singh Falls to Former World No. 1 Karim Gawad in Zurich

Zurich, April 25: Indian squash player Abhay Singh faced a tough defeat against Egypt’s former world number one and world champion Karim Gawad in the men’s quarter-finals of the Grasshopper Cup. This event is part of the PSA Gold-level series.

Ranked 24th in the world, Singh made a comeback after trailing 6-0 in the first game, managing to secure a place in the tiebreak. The second game was fiercely contested against the world number four, but Gawad, the second seed from Egypt, ultimately clinched the match with scores of 12-10 and 11-9.

Gawad showcased high-quality squash during the 32-minute match, starting explosively with a 6-0 lead in the first game. Singh, playing in his first gold quarter-final, fought back, aided by some errors from Gawad that allowed him to level the score.

After saving a game ball, Gawad took the lead 1-0 in the tiebreak. Singh applied significant pressure, helping him establish a 5-2 lead in the second set.

Despite Singh’s efforts to regain control, Gawad solidified his position by winning the second set and advancing to the semi-finals.

The PSA Tour quoted Gawad saying, “I’m really happy. The pace was very fast. We’ve only played twice, but it feels like more. He beat me in four sets in Qatar, and today I stepped on the court thinking I didn’t want to lose again.”

He added that playing against one of the smartest and most talented players on tour in a best-of-three format means you can never predict the next shot or rally. Gawad demonstrated his resilience, coming back from a 7-0 deficit in the first game to equalize in less than three minutes, emphasizing that one should never underestimate what can happen until the very end of the match.
