New Delhi, May 16: On the auspicious occasion of Vat Savitri Vrat and Shani Amavasya, a significant number of devotees flocked to temples and sacred sites across the country on Saturday. From the Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj to Har Ki Pauri in Haridwar, devotees immersed themselves in faith, performing rituals and praying for family and global welfare.
In Prayagraj, millions of devotees arrived early in the morning to bathe at the Triveni Sangam. Married women worshipped the sacred banyan tree after their bath, praying for the long life and prosperity of their husbands.
One female devotee shared, “Today is Vat Savitri Vrat, which holds great significance. Married women come here to perform rituals and seek blessings.”
A male devotee added, “We came here to take a holy dip in the Sangam. Today is Shani Amavasya, which is considered a very important day. After bathing, we prayed for the welfare of all and the well-being of the world.”
Priest Gopal Guru explained, “This Amavasya is considered extremely auspicious and is known as ‘Bargadhi Amavasya.’ Across India, Hindu women observe fasts and perform rituals for the long life of their husbands. It is believed that by doing so, their own lifespan is also extended. Today also marks the birth anniversary of Lord Shani.”
Meanwhile, at the Shri Radha Krishna Temple in Najafgarh, Delhi, a large crowd of devotees was seen from the morning. Women performed the fast and rituals in traditional ways.
In Haridwar, numerous devotees took a dip in the Ganges at Har Ki Pauri. Married women prayed near banyan trees for the longevity of their husbands. One female devotee stated, “Today, we worship the banyan tree. Married women bathe, fast, and perform rituals for the long life of their husbands.”
Mahant Ravindra Puri, President of the Akhada Parishad, remarked, “This fast was established when Satyavan’s life was about to end, and Devi Savitri brought him back from Yama. This tradition has continued since then. Today is significant as it is also the birthday of Shani Dev, and the combination of Amavasya and Saturday makes it very special. Those who worship Shani Dev today will have all their wishes fulfilled.”
