Washington, May 16: President Donald Trump announced that he had extensive discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping on several critical issues. The two leaders addressed topics including Taiwan, artificial intelligence (AI), Iran, trade, cybersecurity operations, and nuclear disarmament. Trump described the talks as “historic,” suggesting they could ease tensions between the world’s two largest economies.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One en route to Anchorage, Trump praised Xi, stating that a solid understanding had developed between them on various international matters. “President Xi is a tremendous person. We had a great time together. I believe these two days were quite historic,” Trump remarked.
According to Trump, the most significant portion of the conversation focused on Taiwan. Xi made it clear that he opposes any attempts at Taiwan’s independence, warning that such actions could lead to severe conflict.
“We talked a lot about Taiwan. Xi does not want a situation where there is a fight for independence, as it could lead to serious conflict,” Trump explained.
He also noted that Xi expressed concerns regarding the U.S. selling arms to Taiwan. Xi inquired whether the U.S. would defend Taiwan in the event of a military conflict.
In response, Trump said, “He asked me if I would protect them. I said I don’t talk about that.” He indicated that a decision on future arms sales to Taiwan would be made soon, stating, “I will decide on that very shortly.”
The leaders also discussed artificial intelligence. Trump mentioned that the U.S. and China could collaborate on the safe use of AI. “We talked about the possibility of working together on security regulations. AI is a fantastic technology. It can do a lot in fields like health, medicine, operations, and military,” he noted.
According to Trump, both countries could also cooperate in managing biological, nuclear, and cyber threats related to AI in the future.
On trade, Trump claimed that China has agreed to a significant purchase of Boeing aircraft. He stated that China could buy over 200 planes, with the number potentially reaching 750. Referring to the engines associated with the Boeing deal, Trump said, “They are buying products from General Electric.”
Additionally, the two leaders discussed nuclear disarmament and the roles of the U.S., China, and Russia in this context.
“We raised the issue of creating a nuclear-free world. It is an idea that could prove very beneficial,” Trump added. He also revealed that there was an open discussion about cybersecurity operations and espionage. When asked about Chinese espionage in the U.S., Trump replied, “We are keeping a close eye on them as well.”
Regarding Iran, Trump stated that Xi agrees that Iran should not acquire nuclear weapons. “His position is very clear that Iran should not have nuclear weapons,” Trump said.
These statements suggest that despite ongoing competition between the U.S. and China, both nations are attempting to enhance dialogue and cooperation on several significant strategic issues. However, differences remain regarding trade, technology, military influence, and the Indo-Pacific region. The Taiwan issue continues to be the most sensitive topic in U.S.-China relations.
