Asansol, May 16: Tensions flared in Asansol, West Bengal, following a clash between police and local residents over the volume of a mosque loudspeaker. The situation escalated when some individuals reportedly attacked a police station, leading to vandalism.
Reports indicate that a complaint was lodged regarding the loudspeaker’s volume. In response, police intervened, requesting a reduction in the sound level. This action sparked a dispute, causing unrest in the Jahangir Mohalla and surrounding areas. Angered locals allegedly assaulted a police station and caused damage. However, police managed to control the situation through a baton charge, and additional forces were deployed afterward.
Asansol’s Deputy Commissioner of Police, V.G. Satish Pasumarthy, stated that the situation is now under control. “Everything is in police hands, and there are no issues,” he assured. Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage to identify the instigators, and legal action will be taken against all involved.
A local resident noted that the conflict began over the loudspeaker volume during prayers in Azad Basti. He remarked, “This incident involved some youths who damaged the police station and took the law into their own hands. They should not have acted this way; instead, they should have engaged in dialogue. Destroying the police station was wrong. There is no conflict with the administration, and we condemn this incident.”
Congress councilor S.M. Mustafa from Ward 25 commented, “When we received news of the incident, we were at the party office. We are still trying to understand why this happened. Reports suggest that some young people had an argument with the police. We have not yet determined the root cause of the incident, but the manner in which it unfolded is unacceptable.”
He added, “We have visited the police station to assess the situation. The police are taking action. We urge everyone to refrain from spreading rumors. The situation in Asansol is stable, and there are no issues.”
