US Withdraws from 66 International Agencies in ‘America First’ Move

New Delhi: The United States, under President Donald Trump, has announced it will withdraw from 66 international organisations, including those focused on climate change and global welfare, prioritising American interests. This decision means that the US, one of the world’s most developed nations, will no longer contribute to these agencies.

According to The Guardian, the list includes 35 non-UN organisations and 31 United Nations bodies. The White House and the State Department have stated that these organisations work against US interests, involve financial wastage, and suffer from poor management. This move is being seen as a key part of President Trump’s ‘America First’ policy.

Following the announcement, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio commented that these agreements hinder America’s progress and negatively impact economies and people’s lives. He added that stepping away from these organisations fulfils President Trump’s promises to Americans and that the administration will stop funding bureaucrats working against US interests. “The Trump administration will always put America and Americans first,” Rubio said.

Among the organisations affected is the International Solar Alliance (ISA), a group initiated by India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former French President François Hollande at the 2015 Paris Climate Conference.

The US will also exit the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), a 1992 agreement that brings together nearly all countries to combat climate change. The US Senate had approved this treaty in October 1992. This agreement is central to the Paris Climate Agreement, from which Trump had already signalled America’s withdrawal. In November 2025, the US did not send a delegation to the UN climate talks held in Brazil.

In addition, the US will separate itself from other key climate bodies such as the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). President Trump has frequently dismissed climate science, calling it a “scam” and “fake.”

Earlier, in January 2025, the US declared it would leave the World Health Organization (WHO). As per rules, a one-year notice is required, meaning the US will no longer be a WHO member after 22 January 2026.

This significant shift reflects the Trump administration’s focus on national interests over global cooperation in areas like climate and health.
