Mumbai, May 16: The United Nations has reported that approximately 19.5 million people in Sudan are facing a severe food crisis. Farhan Haq, the Deputy Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, cited data from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the World Food Programme (WFP), and UNICEF.
During a daily briefing, Haq indicated that the risk of famine persists in 14 regions of Greater Darfur and Greater Kordofan. He warned that conditions are likely to worsen during the difficult weather period, known as the lean season, between June and September. He emphasized that humanitarian assistance remains critically insufficient compared to the needs.
Haq noted that humanitarian organizations aimed to reach 4.8 million people each month between February and May. However, only an estimated 3.13 million individuals received aid in February.
The spokesperson further stated that the FAO, WFP, and UNICEF have called for an immediate halt to hostile activities. They urged the international community to urgently increase funding for food, emergency food production, nutrition, health, water, sanitation services, and livelihood recovery efforts.
Earlier, on May 13, UN humanitarian officials reported that relief supplies were being distributed in war-torn southwestern Sudan, while a target of $12 million in aid for famine relief in South Sudan was set.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) stated, “The UN and its humanitarian partners are continuously working to meet humanitarian needs across Sudan.”
The office reported that aid organizations in the Kordofan region are providing life-saving assistance to displaced persons, refugees, and local communities. In the Sheikan and Al Rahad areas of North Kordofan state, approximately 85,000 people have received water and sanitation support.
Additionally, humanitarian workers distributed blankets, mosquito nets, and other essential household items to 2,000 displaced families in Sheikan.
In South Kordofan state, around 88,000 people, including South Sudanese refugees, displaced individuals, and local communities, received water and sanitation assistance. However, the office expressed concern that ongoing fighting poses a serious threat to the lives of civilians.
