Washington, April 26: U.S. President Donald Trump described the presidency as a “dangerous profession,” asserting that he will not be intimidated by violence. This statement came just hours after a gunman was apprehended near the venue of the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.
During a press briefing at the White House on Saturday night, Trump remarked, “When something like this happens, it is always shocking. I was completely taken aback that it occurred.”
Tensions have been high between the U.S. and Iran since late February. When asked if Iran was involved in the incident, Trump replied, “I don’t think so, but you can never say for sure.”
He explained that the situation unfolded rapidly, leaving little time for a response. “I was watching what was happening. When the security personnel sprang into action, the First Lady immediately understood what was going on.”
Initially, Trump thought the sound of gunfire was less serious, believing it to be a dropped tray. “The noise was quite loud, but it was indeed the sound of gunfire,” he clarified.
The President stated that the threat was neutralized before it could reach him or the main event. “That individual never entered the area and was stopped at a considerable distance,” Trump confirmed.
Despite the incident, Trump expressed his determination to remain at the event. “I made every effort to stay. I want to convey to those disturbed individuals that they will not change how we live and work.” The decision to evacuate the venue was made not personally but as a matter of security protocol.
Trump emphasized, “I am here to work. This is part of the job.” When questioned about the frequency of such incidents, he provided a broader perspective. “I have studied murders. Those who have the most impact often become targets.”
Linking political success to increasing sensitivity, Trump acknowledged, “I know many people are not happy with you.” He reaffirmed his commitment to his agenda despite the risks involved.
He announced plans to host another Correspondents’ Dinner within the next 30 days, stating that public events will not be disrupted by violence.
Trump urged Americans to resolve their differences peacefully, calling on Republicans, Democrats, and independents to collaborate. He concluded by reiterating his trust in security forces and his resolve to continue his duties.
