
New Delhi, May 22: The Election Commission of India has announced by-elections for two Rajya Sabha seats in Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu. These seats became vacant following the resignations of the incumbent leaders. The elections for both seats will take place on June 18.
In Maharashtra, a by-election will be held for a Rajya Sabha seat after Sunetra Pawar resigned. Her term was set to last until July 4, 2028, but she stepped down on May 6 after being elected as a legislator. In Tamil Nadu, C.V. Shanmugam, a leader of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), also resigned from his Rajya Sabha membership on May 7 after winning a seat in the Malai Madu constituency during the assembly elections. His term was scheduled to end on June 29, 2028.
Currently, the Election Commission has confirmed the by-elections for both seats. Voting will occur on June 18, with results announced on the same day.
Additionally, the Election Commission has also declared biennial elections to fill the seats of members retiring in June and July. The terms of 24 Rajya Sabha members from ten states will conclude during this period. The Commission has set the election dates for all these 24 seats.
Voting for the biennial elections will take place on June 18, with results released on the same day. According to the Commission, notifications will be issued on June 1, and the last date for filing nominations is June 8.
Elections will be held for four seats each in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Gujarat. Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan will have three seats each, while Jharkhand will have two. Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Manipur, and Meghalaya will each have one seat up for election.
The Commission has mandated the appointment of observers to ensure free and fair elections, implementing measures for close monitoring of the election process.
