Truck Collides with Security Vehicle of Congress Candidate Adhir Chowdhury in West Bengal

Kolkata, April 8: A truck collided with the security vehicle of Congress candidate Adhir Chowdhury on Wednesday evening while returning from campaigning in Kandi, located in the Baharampur assembly constituency of Murshidabad district. The Election Commission has requested a report regarding this incident.

Fortunately, Chowdhury escaped unharmed. The accident occurred as he was returning from a campaign event in Kandi. Chowdhury’s security personnel were also present in the vehicle.

However, Ketan Jaiswal, the head of the media department, sustained injuries in the crash.

The Congress party has accused the police of failing to provide assistance despite repeated requests for help. According to party leaders, Chowdhury, a prominent candidate, is scheduled to visit various parts of the state for campaigning.

On Wednesday, Chowdhury was in Kandi for election promotions. The accident happened when an out-of-control truck collided with his convoy’s car, damaging the rear of the vehicle.

Congress workers reported that there was no police support following the incident. They claimed that the inspector in charge of the Kandi police station did not arrive at the scene even 20 minutes after the accident.

The Congress workers noted that Chowdhury’s car was directly behind the vehicle that was struck by the truck, and they narrowly escaped injury.

In light of this incident, the Election Commission has promptly requested a report to determine if there were any lapses in the high-level security arrangements.

It is noteworthy that Chowdhury faced opposition from some Trinamool Congress workers during his campaign in Baharampur, which led to an increase in his central security detail shortly thereafter.

Previously, while serving as an MP, Chowdhury was provided with ‘Y Plus’ central security, which included five security personnel. Despite losing in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the central government did not withdraw his security detail.

As per the latest updates, the number of ‘Y Plus’ personnel has increased from five to ten. In addition to central security, Chowdhury has also been assigned two state police constables. Five additional personnel arrived on Tuesday.
