Tragic Collapse of Under-Construction Bridge Claims Six Lives in Hamirpur

Hamirpur, May 29: A devastating incident occurred in Hamirpur district, Uttar Pradesh, where a section of an under-construction bridge collapsed due to a severe storm. Tragically, six workers lost their lives, and several others are feared trapped under the debris. Local police and residents are actively engaged in rescue operations at the site.

According to Arvind Kumar Verma, the Assistant Superintendent of Police in Hamirpur, the incident was reported around 2 AM on May 29. The bridge, which connects Morakandar and Kurara in the Lalpur area, suffered a slab collapse, trapping individuals beneath it. Emergency teams, including the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), are working tirelessly to rescue three individuals who remain stuck on a pillar. Six workers are confirmed to be trapped under the rubble, with five of their identities already established. Efforts are underway to remove the slab and retrieve them.

Reports indicate that a significant portion of the bridge over the Betwa River collapsed while many workers were resting underneath, leading to the tragedy. The deceased are believed to be laborers from Banda and Hamirpur districts. The construction of this bridge was initiated through the efforts of Rajya Sabha MP Baburam Nishad.

Officials have arrived at the scene to oversee the relief and rescue operations. The immediate priority is to safely extract those trapped in the debris. A technical team has also been summoned to investigate the cause of the collapse, assessing whether there were any deficiencies in the bridge’s construction or other contributing factors. Rescue operations are ongoing at a rapid pace, with a large crowd present at the site, and senior police and administrative officials are monitoring the situation closely. The administration is working to identify the deceased and the injured.
